“Why Round Top, TX?” is the question we’re asked repeatedly since moving our business of 25 years from Denver to rural Texas. Well, for us it began with the Round Top Antiques Show. Started over 50 years ago, this “show” has grown from one weekend a year to the largest antique “shows” in the US which are now spread over 2+ weeks every Spring and Fall, and a growing winter show as well. For anyone who enjoys antiques, this is a “must see/do event.” Search the internet, and you will find countless sites that reference the “Round Top Texas Antiques Show.” Here's our insider’s view of, “The Show” by overcoming some common misperceptions:
For starters, it is not just “Round Top.” The towns of Warrenton, Fayetteville, Round Top, Carmine and Burton are all involved. The “Show” is a misnomer, because it is comprised of almost 2,000 antique vendors from all over the US and the world. Don't worry about crowds as it is spread over 5 towns and 21+ miles of antiques! Different vendors and venues open and close their individual “show” over an 18 day period while some are open the entire duration. You will drive along 2-lane TX State Hwy 237 and pass green fields filled with sprawling anchient oak trees, marvel at the longhorn cattle and be struck by the natural beauty of this rural corner of Texas. There is plenty of free parking at most major venues. While impressed by the volume of antiques to see, be sure to look out the window and enjoy the view as well!
It is not just one week long. If you find a website that states something shorter, they are simply promoting their individual show, and not the area-wide 2 1/2 week event. Only 2 venues charge admission for their show which is a 5-6 day event (all others are free admission). The Spring Show is March 14-31, 2024 (with largest popular venues open March 16-30). The Fall Show is scheduled for October 10-27, 2024 although some vendors may change their opening date earlier than typical. As a reminder, the larger venues are open the first Saturday thru the last Saturday.
The Round Top Antique Show is not only in the Spring and Fall. Even many regular visitors to Round Top are unaware there is a winter weekend show the 3rd weekend in January. For those intimidated by the crowds of the larger Spring and Fall shows, this is the perfect "starter" weekend to explore antiques and Round Top, TX without being overwhelmed. The next Winter Show is January 16-19, 2025. Come check it out!
If you are staying a few nights, we recommend reserving lodging immediately (regardless of how far off the dates may sound!) and make dinner reservations prior to your arrival as restaurants book up in advance. During daytime shopping hours, a myriad of great food trucks are available at most venues. Stay hydrated! Wear flat shoes as there are many venues in dirt, gravel and grass. Be prepared to drive between the larger antique venues, tents and shops.
So what IS the Round Top Antique Show? It is not just “antique shopping” but a true adventure to experience in person! Better yet, bring some friends to share in the fun.
