Original painted Hungarian flat-top chest dated 1890, crafted in pine with carved panel details and turned half-column elements along the front. The original painted surface features a very dark navy, nearly black background accented with traditional red, green, and cream floral and vine motifs. A handwritten name and the date 1890 remain visible within the central octagonal panel.
Heavy hand-wrought iron side handles remain in place. The hinged top opens to reveal a spacious interior with an additional small cabinet on the left side intended for storing personal items. The bottom shows age-related separation between the two main planks with cracks visible, consistent with construction of the period.
The chest has been treated with a natural wax finish to provide a soft luster while preserving the original paint.
Restored, strong, and stable, this chest is ready for use and represents a highly decorative example of late 19th-century Hungarian folk furniture. Extensive cracks and separation seen along the top, with wear and distress throughout the chest's original painted finish.
