20th-century set of four Italian brutalist-style birthing chairs carved from solid hardwood. These sculptural chairs feature integrated handholds on each side, originally intended to assist with breathing and support during the birthing process. The curved seat and back are formed as a continuous sculptural shape, supported by four legs built directly into the design.
Decorative carving at the top and along the handholds enhances the dramatic brutalist aesthetic. The feet indicate that the set appears to consist of two different pairs joined together, adding to their visual interest and uniqueness. Surface wear developed over time includes cracks, stains, scratches, and finish distress, with minor loss to the rear legs on one chair.
Restored, strong, and stable, these chairs are ready for use. Their compact scale and bold form make them striking in small spaces, and they may be used indoors or easily moved outdoors. An unusual and visually compelling set reflecting Italian brutalist design and functional folk craftsmanship.
