Mid-19th century Hungarian flat top trunk constructed of pine and dated 1848. The front is adorned with attractive carved detailing, flanked by painted half-column accents. Residual teal green paint remains faintly visible along the front and is more clearly preserved on the sides, while the top and back present natural pine with deep patina developed through generations of use. The top surface shows staining, discoloration, scratches, gouges, and softened wear consistent with age. The front exhibits old cracks, a vertical separation running parallel to the bottom edge, and a few small holes, all reflective of long-term use. The back shows additional gouges and old cracking, and the original side handles are no longer present. When opened, the interior reveals a hand-written name and the date of 1848, adding to its historical significance. This trunk has been restored, waxed both inside and out, and is strong, stable, and ready for use. The extensive patina, distress and surface wear contribute to the authentic rustic character of this Hungarian storage piece.
