Mid 19th century Swedish carousel horse, hand carved in pine with a heavily distressed original painted finish. Painted details remain along the saddle, bridle, and mane, while a small amount of original horsehair remains at the tail. The scale and construction indicate that the horse likely originated from a small carousel or for a smaller child.
The horse currently rests on a metal rod welded to a circular iron base, allowing it to rotate for display. Additional holes through the carved wood body indicate that other components were once attached. Cracks, gouges, scratches, old repairs, distress to the feet and ears, and age related separation along multiple joints are visible throughout. The extensive wear and remnants of original paint contribute greatly to the authentic character and sculptural appeal of this antique carousel horse.
Solid, stable, and ready to place as a decorative object. Not intended for use as a toy.
