Large 19th century Danish bookcase, crafted in pine with an impressive architectural form and a distinctive 24-drawer apothecary section across the base. Likely originally used as a display cabinet in a shop during the mid-1800s to display and store wares, the cabinet combines extensive practical storage with highly decorative craftsmanship.
The upper display section is divided into three areas by four fluted carved columns. A highly decorative crown incorporates dentil molding, wave patterns, acanthus leaves, and additional carved details, reflecting the quality and importance of the original display. Narrow upper shelves measuring approximately 5 inches deep are removable, allowing flexibility for books, collections, or decorative objects.
The central 22-drawer apothecary base is flanked by two projecting cabinets that extend approximately 14 inches from the center. Each has a small drawer positioned above a narrow cabinet door. The doors open by turning the wood knob handles to release the latches and reveal three shelves that slide outward like drawers for convenient access.
The cabinet is constructed in two sections for easier transportation and installation. Typical age related nicks, scratches, and small cracks are visible throughout, particularly around the base and the upper area covering the sideboard section. A small angled section has been cut from the upper left crown where it rests against the wall, likely to accommodate a previous installation. The largest crack is visible along the lower left side. A narrow back panel on the right side appears to have been replaced at some point in time.
Restored, stable, and ready to use. All drawers are functional.
