19th century Austrian cabinet, crafted in pine with a highly decorative original hand-painted folk art finish. A central concave curved cabinet door depicts a soldier or nobleman on horseback and is surrounded by eight curved decorative drawers, with an additional narrow curved drawer positioned beneath the door.
Brick or burnished/rusty red, blue, teal, and cream tones enliven the façade against a faux wood painted background characteristic of folk art decoration from the period. The cabinet rests on four bun feet, completing its distinctive and highly decorative form.
The central door retains its original functioning lock and key and opens to reveal an interior lined at some point with pale white and gray decorative vintage wallpaper. An upper half shelf provides additional interior storage. Drawers are also lined in same wallpaper.
The natural pine top appears to have been replaced at some point in time. Although likely a later addition, it has developed its own age related scuffs, nicks, scratches, and stains. Separation between planks is visible along the back, while the sides retain signs of old dried wormhole activity that is no longer active. Additional nicks, scratches, and distress throughout the original painted finish reflect generations of use.
Restored, stable, and ready to use.
