This exceptional Gustavian bench is a special find. Note the original pale gray painted finish (with white undertones), now scraped down revealing a warm aged patina reflecting the age and grace of this lovely pine bench.
The finials, feet, and decorative carved and fluted details of the back are all original.
This bench was originally designed with a removable seat vs hinged, revealing storage space below. However, with the current upholstered seat adding to the snug fit, it is easier to leave the bench seat in place. Note the deconstructed look of visible staples and nailheads throughout the simple muslin upholstery. The muslin/linen holds batting in place and is ready to be upholstered at discretion of buyer.
Restored, strong and functional this bench is ready to be used and enjoyed. Back was painted at a later/more recent point in time as it was designed to sit against a wall.
All scratches, cracks, dings, and age related separation are reflective of age and do not detract from the beauty nor function of this lovely Swedish Gustavian bench.
